A Whisper? Really? Come on, they cna’t be that quiet.
How quiet are these Tetra whisper air pumps? Well, let’s start off by saying that they are not silent. They are, however, one of the more quiet air pumps that we have used. We have used them in multiple different ways. As airlifts on sponge filters, air stones and on bubble curtains to name a few. In all of these capacities, we have been pleased with the performance of these pumps.
These Tetra pumps are diaphragm pumps. The pump uses a small electric motor to oscillate a diaphragm assembly thereby producing air flow at the outlet. Due to the nature of how this air pump works, when operating there will be a low audible hum. These pumps have been designed with a durable plastic housing that also helps to reduce noise with its shape and rubber feet.
This air output is then directed via air hose into your aquarium and most commonly ends with either an air stone or sponge filter assembly.
A common misconception is that the air pump is used to infuse your aquarium with oxygen. Actually the oxygen in your aquarium water is gained through the surface agitation that is created when the bubbles from the air pump break at the surface.
